Eff ects on 11-year mortality and morbidity of lowering LDL cholesterol with simvastatin for about 5 years in 20 536 high-risk individuals: a randomised controlled trial

چکیده
Background Findings of large randomised trials have shown that lowering LDL cholesterol with statins reduces vascular morbidity and mortality rapidly, but limited evidence exists about the long-term effi cacy and safety of statin treatment. The aim of the extended follow-up of the Heart Protection Study (HPS) is to assess long-term effi cacy and safety of lowering LDL cholesterol with statins, and here we report cause-specifi c mortality and major morbidity in the in-trial and post-trial periods.

متن کاملThe effects of cholesterol lowering with simvastatin on cause-specific mortality and on cancer incidence in 20,536 high-risk people: a randomised placebo-controlled trial [ISRCTN48489393]
BACKGROUND There have been concerns that low blood cholesterol concentrations may cause non-vascular mortality and morbidity. Randomisation of large numbers of people to receive a large, and prolonged, reduction in cholesterol concentrations provides an opportunity to address such concerns reliably. METHODS 20,536 UK adults (aged 40-80 years) with vascular disease or diabetes were randomly al...
متن کاملMRC/BHF Heart Protection Study of cholesterol-lowering with simvastatin in 5963 people with diabetes: a randomised placebo-controlled trial.
BACKGROUND Individuals with diabetes are at increased risk of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, although typically their plasma concentrations of LDL cholesterol are similar to those in the general population. Previous evidence about the effects of lowering cholesterol in people with diabetes has been limited, and most diabetic patients do not currently receive cholesterol-lowering therap...

310 www.thelancet.com Vol 385 January 24, 2015 The topic of the side-eff ects of statin treatment is important and controversial. In The Lancet, Daniel Swerdlow and colleagues used an updated meta-analysis of trials to investigate whether or not statins increased the risk of type 2 diabetes, and a genetic app roach to address how statins might increase the risk of the disorder. Using data from ...
